big new idea for stopping climate change — but it has huge environmental problems of its own
1/25/18
Scientist are questioning a future technique to remove carbon dioxide from the environment. The technique is called the Bio Energy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) . The way it works is that they would burn trees and capture the carbon dioxide into the ground therefore the trees planted later on would pull more CO2 from the air while removing the majority of it from the atmosphere. It is only rarely being used this far.
Unexpected side effect to cleaning up urban air discovered
12/02/17
Recent studies show a new hazardous chemical becoming increasingly more popular in North American cities. They are classified as higher levels of organic hydroperoxide. It has a negative impact on the planet and on human health. Regulations to improve the pollution has worked in the past but now those changes are coming to a halt
Pollution is no good for us. Scientist are now going to have to find a way to help relieve this problem before it starts getting out of hand. Breathing in those particles can cause serious damage.

.The Dodo was one of the unlucky birds to go extinct. Their was an increasing battle for food and little land left on the small island for all the animals to survive. The only thing left behind now is their cousin, solitaires. Now solitaires are in danger of becoming extinct but now we have the equipment to to help save them
Birds and other animals are beginning to die off at faster rates now then years ago. Humans are at times the cause of this happening. We need to be more considerate on where and how we use land.

Huge weather rescue project under way
11/23/2017
Scientist have discovered a weather map from 1854. They are looking for someone who can interpret it and put it in a form that can be put onto the computer. They want to compare the differences on the weather back then to how it is now. They can now see if weather patterns we have now have happened in the past.
This map is very helpful to us all. It can help us better understand the weather and how it was a few years ago. It can also help to show people how global warming and our pollution has made a change on the earth and its weather.

SEA GRASSES boost ecosystem health by fighting bad bacteria
11/16/17
Under water sea grass is helping kill off bacteria in the ocean. It is also helping the corral and fish become healthier. Sea grasses have been compared to being like a rain forest. They have been removing nitrogen and phosphorus from the water which can help the entire ecosystem. Less bacteria in the fish lead to better food. Healthy corrals help with erosion
Corrals have been slowly dying out due to pollution in the water. The sea grass can help bring back life to the ocean by cleaning it up and making it available for fish and more plants to live in. It is creating more benefits to help with the pollution but it is also being harmed by it. If the sea grass disappears then that is one less way to help save the ocean and the creatures living within it.

Why did the Earth's ancient oceans disappear?
11/09/17
Oceans that were once on the surface of the Earth have been long buried underneath the mantle now. Scientist have discovered that oceans move as fast as our fingernails grow. Geo scientist at CEED have found a way to map the ancient oceans using seismic tomography. They are used to reconstruct the movements of oceans and continents.
This new tool has helped see how the world has evolved over time. There a more questions about Earth that can be answered now. It also opens up room for more questions to look into.

For the first time scientists have directly observed living bacteria in polar ice and snow
For the first time scientist have found living bacteria in the snow. It proves that humans are making a big problem with the levels of CO2. They used ice core samples to compare CO2 levels from then to now. They found that the gas trapped in the ice was most likely a cause of bacteria in the snow as it turns to ice.
This research has made it clear that the CO2 levels back then might be lower than what they previously thought. Signs of life can appear where you least expect it. Now researchers are going to look deeper into the ice to see if they can find any current living bacteria.

AT LEAST 1 KILLED, 1 INJURED AFTER MASSIVE ROCKSLIDE ON YOSEMITE'S EL CAPITAN
9/28/2017
El Capitan in Yosemite recently had a landslide. El Capitan is one of the largest granite monoliths in the world. There were a lot of climbers due to how busy it gets during the time of the year but there was a minimal number of tragedies. One person has been announced dead and another was simply just injured.
Landslides are usually difficult to predict. Anyone who hikes or climbs mountains should be aware of the structure. There should be procedures that will help prevent accidents and tell everyone what to do during one.

SOFT SOIL MAKES MEXICO CITY SHAKE LIKE IT WAS BUILT ON JELLY
Mexico was hit with an earthquake of 7.1 magnitude. At least 225 people were killed some of which were children. The earthquake caused about 32 buildings to collapse. The soil that the city sits on was once a lake. It caused the seismic waves to be worse then they should have been because the soil amplifies the effects.
The city should have made the ground stable enough for any future natural disasters after the casualties that occurred during the earthquakes that happened exactly 32 years ago. The soft soil was the main reason for most of the damages and could have been easily been avoided. Now Mexico City will have to pay a lot for damages and this will be a hard tragedy to recover from.

OPENINGS IN ARCTIC SEA ICE ARE AFFECTING WORLDWIDE CLIMATE
It is no secret that ice caps are melting because of climate change but not everyone is aware how that can also affect temperatures worldwide. The heat that escapes from the sea through openings are impacting sea temperatures, atmospheric temperatures and wind patterns.Scientist believe that one of the causes is the heat that got caught in the subsurface ocean waters during the "climate hiatus" period between the late 1990's and early 2000's when temperatures were constantly rising.
Ice cap melting's are not only affecting the lives of animals but also humans. Climate change is the reason for melting ice caps but now scientist have discovered that they are helping contribute to the worldwide problem. There needs to be a solution found as soon as possible or else matters are going to become worse. If humans all changed the way they lived to a more environmental friendly lifestyle it would help slow down the situation.

AIR MONITORS DETECT CANCER-CAUSING COMPOUND AS ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS GROW IN EAST HARRIS COUNTY
On August 27, a report was made about a leak in a storage tank because of heavy rainfalls from Hurricane Harvey An estimate of 6.7 pounds of Benzene were accidentally being released. It reached twice the states limit of exposure. Prior to the hurricane Texas governor temporarily suspended the requirements that oil spills must be reported by companies leaving them with an option to voluntarily make a report instead.
Benzene is known to be a danger to humans, it can cause dizziness, headaches, unconsciousness and worse case scenario cancer. This shows other effects that were generated by Hurricane Harvey besides the visible destruction it has done too homes and other buildings. The EPA toxicologists are currently collecting air and water samples to gather data that will be updated for the public to see, . As of now it is completely up to the EPA to figure out actions to take to resolve this problem.

CHEMICAL HAZE DRIFTS ASHORE NEAR BIRLING GAP, ENGLAND
On Sunday evening a mysterious cloud filled the England sky. The cloud left many residents of Birling Gap with sore throats, irritated eyes and vomiting. It has been reported that the cloud like substance smelled of burning plastic.Because of how low the cloud hung Alastair Hay, an environmental scientist predicted that the compound was heavier than air. An investigation is currently active to find the source of the cloud.
Air is the most important resource to humans on the earth. Pollution has been a problem for a long time now but it should not be at a point where it can cause damage to a person health. England has had an experience like this before from industries in France. A way to prevent future problems such as this one, more regulations should be put on factories and how much air toxins they can release. This goes to show that the severity of air pollution has risen and needs to be taken more serious by everyone around the world.

- In the article written by Matt McGrath he covers the recently discovered arsenic lingering around Pakistan's ground water. Arsenic is a deadly chemical that can be found in rocks and sediment. In Pakistan there are now about 60 million people at risk due to the contamination. Arsenic has been known to cause skin disorders, cancer and cardiovascular issues. Scientist believe that irrigation has helped the problem increase.
The article shows how important resources are taken for granted. Water is a part of peoples daily lives and when something happens it can causes major setbacks. Hopefully now that the news about the arsenic in the water has been spreading environmental organizations will help provide consumable water for Pakistan.
